Can I keep my business phone number when switching to VoIP?

Short answer: yes. Your phone number belongs to your business, not your phone company, and you can bring it with you to a cloud phone system. Here's how number porting works and how to make the switch without missing a call.

What number porting is

Porting is the process of moving a phone number from one provider to another. Canada's number portability rules let businesses take their numbers with them when they change providers, for both landline and mobile numbers.

Cloud Connect ports existing landline and mobile numbers, including toll-free numbers. Your customers keep dialling the same number, and it rings on your new system.

What you'll need

  • A recent bill from your current provider, showing the account number and the exact name and service address on the account
  • The list of numbers you want to move, including fax and toll-free numbers
  • A signed authorization (often called a letter of authorization) allowing the new provider to request the port

The details on the port request must match your current provider's records exactly. Mismatched names or addresses are the most common reason a port gets rejected.

How long it takes

Timelines vary by carrier and by number type. Your new provider will give you a confirmed port date. Until then, your existing service keeps working normally.

How to switch without downtime

  1. Don't cancel your old service first. Cancelling before the port completes can release the number. The port itself moves the number over.
  2. Set up the new system before port day. Users, extensions, the auto attendant or AI receptionist, and time frames should all be ready.
  3. Use a temporary number to test. Make and receive calls on the new system before your main number moves.
  4. Port during a quiet time and keep someone available to test inbound calls right after.
  5. Update your Google Business Profile only if a number is changing. If you ported, nothing changes.

Can my ported number send texts?

Often, yes. Cloud Connect provides SMS-enabled numbers for most places in North America, so you can text customers from your business number once it has moved.

Adding new numbers at the same time

A move is a good time to tidy up your numbers: add direct lines for key staff, a toll-free number, or local numbers in other markets. Cloud Connect offers local numbers in over 1,600 Canadian cities and towns.
